The Call (part 2)

Here we are the day of the call: 7 April 2006. As you can see we were all pretty excited about it. The letter Richard is holding in his hand is the actual letter from the First Presidency assigning him to the Florida Ft. Lauderdale Mission and is signed by the Prophet, President Gordon B. Hinckley.

Also I've included the map to the mission boundaries. As you can see the shaded area of Southeastern Florida is included as well as the Keys and Bahamas.

Richard will be learning the Haitian Creole language. He will be at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah for a two-month crash course before he gets to Florida. The language sounds very French, with a sort of southern overtone. A very beautiful language and we are looking forward to hearing him speak it.

For those of you unfamiliar with our religion and how this mission thing works, he is expected to serve for two-years' without coming home, and leaving behind all other personal affairs. He is putting his education and everything else on hold. He is also going at his own expense. Family members and friends may help out, but the Church does not subsidize these young men and women who volunteer to serve the Lord full-time for two-years.

We are very busy with preparations for his departure, but I will keep you updated.

The Call

Richard has been called to serve in the Florida Ft. Lauderdale Mission. This mission comprises Southeastern Florida, the Keys, and the Bahamas. He reports to the Mission Training Center and begins his two-year stint on July 5th. we are all thrilled and very busy with his preparations. Although he has prepared his entire life for this moment, now that it is actually happening, there is a lot to do.
